When you step onto Captain Zach's boat, you're in for a true Lowcountry fishing adventure. We'll cruise through winding tidal creeks and expansive flats, surrounded by golden marsh grass and oyster beds teeming with life. The beauty of inshore fishing is that the action can be hot just about any time of year. In the warmer months, we might be sight-casting to tailing redfish in skinny water or working topwater lures for aggressive trout. Come fall and winter, we'll target sheepshead around structure or hunt for bull reds in deeper channels. No matter the season, Captain Zach's got the local intel to put you on fish and the patience to make sure everyone on board has a great time.
We use a variety of fishing techniques to match the conditions and target species. Some days we'll be tossing soft plastics on light tackle, feeling for that telltale thump of a flounder strike. Other times, we might be soaking live bait near oyster bars for hungry reds. Captain Zach provides all the top-notch gear you'll need, from rods and reels to tackle and bait. His boat is perfectly rigged for inshore fishing, with a shallow draft to access those hard-to-reach spots where the big ones hide. Don't worry if you're new to fishing – Zach's always happy to show you the ropes, from how to cast to setting the hook when a fish bites.
Don't just take our word for it – here's what some recent guests had to say about their trips with Captain Zach: "We had an amazing day! The fishing was great and Captain Zach was even better. A pleasure to spend time on the water with him!" - Ralph "Captain Zach was great with our family! We caught all kinds of fish and he was so patient with myself and my kids ages 11, 15, 17, 19, 24!!! We got to keep what we caught and take home what we could. Had an amazing fish fry the next evening. It was the best part of our trip! Thank you!" - Denell "Captain Zach put us on the fish. As soon as the first line hit the water we were catching fish. He is very knowledgeable and great at giving advice. I highly recommend and will definitely book with him again in the future." - Christopher
Redfish: Also known as red drum, these copper-colored bruisers are the crown jewels of Savannah's inshore waters. Redfish can range from "rat reds" of a couple pounds to trophy-sized bulls over 40 inches long. They love to cruise the flats and hang around oyster bars, often revealing their location with their trademark tailing behavior. The fight of a redfish is something every angler should experience – they pull like a freight train and don't give up easily.
Speckled Trout: These spotted beauties are a favorite among light tackle enthusiasts. Trout are ambush predators, often found around marsh edges, creek mouths, and grass flats. They're known for their soft mouths and tendency to shake hooks, making them a fun challenge to land. In the fall, big gator trout move into the shallows, offering the chance at a true trophy.
Flounder: Masters of camouflage, flounder lie in wait on the bottom, ready to ambush passing baitfish. While they might not look like much, don't be fooled – flounder put up a spirited fight and make for some of the best eating around. We target them around sandy patches, drop-offs, and creek mouths, especially during their fall migration.
Sheepshead: With their distinctive black and white stripes, sheepshead are often called the convict fish. They're notorious bait stealers, thanks to their human-like teeth perfect for crushing crabs and barnacles. Catching sheepshead requires finesse and patience, but the reward is a hard-fighting fish that's also delicious on the dinner plate.

I booked this trip as a Father's Day gift while on vacation with our family. My son, 7 year old, tagged along for the trip. They all had a blast and had nothing but great things to say about the trip & Captain Zach. My son was absolutely over the moon with his experience and the fish they caught (the coolest being a stingray!). The trip sounded like it went exactly as I had hoped for and was how all previous reviews reported. We would definitely book again with Capt. Zach's Charters.

Redfish, also called red drum, are one of our most popular inshore species. You'll find them in shallow flats and creeks, often with their backs out of the water as they hunt crabs and baitfish. Most run 3-10 pounds, but bull reds over 20 pounds show up in the fall. Look for their copper-colored backs and distinctive tail spots. Reds put up a strong, bulldog fight and are excellent eating when slot-sized. They'll hit a variety of lures, but it's hard to beat a gold spoon or scented soft plastic. Fall is prime time as big schools move through. Here's a local tip: on hot summer days, look for reds tailing in flooded grass during high tides. Sight-casting to these fish is incredibly exciting, even if it sometimes means getting a bit muddy!
Speckled sea trout, or "specks," are a favorite inshore target here in Savannah. These silvery fish with spotted backs typically run 14-20 inches, though gator trout over 5 pounds aren't uncommon. Look for them around grass flats, oyster beds, and creek mouths, especially on moving tides. They're most active at dawn and dusk, often creating surface commotion as they chase bait. Fall and spring are peak seasons. Trout put up a good fight with head-shaking jumps and make excellent eating. Try live shrimp under a popping cork, or work soft plastics with a twitching retrieve. One local trick: on calm mornings, look for nervous bait on the surface - there's often trout underneath. These fish have soft mouths, so go easy on the hook-set to avoid tearing out.
Sheepshead are odd-looking fish with human-like teeth and black stripes that earn them the nickname "convict fish." You'll find them around barnacle-covered structures like pilings, bridges, and reefs in 10-30 feet of water. Most run 1-8 pounds, but lunkers over 15 pounds show up occasionally. Spring is prime time as they gather to spawn near passes and offshore structures. Sheepshead are notorious bait stealers, so a sensitive rod and quick hook-set are crucial. They put up a stubborn fight and taste great, but cleaning them can be tricky due to tough scales. For best results, use small hooks with fiddler crabs or pieces of shrimp. Here's a local tip: scrape some barnacles off a piling to chum them up, then drop your bait right in the mix. It's a blast watching them pick off your bait with those chompers!
Summer flounder are masters of camouflage, blending in with sandy or muddy bottoms. You'll find these flatfish in shallow coastal waters, often near structures like docks or reefs. They typically range from 15-20 inches, but trophy-sized doormats over 10 pounds aren't unheard of. Fall is prime time as they migrate to deeper waters. Flounder put up a decent fight and make for excellent table fare with their mild, flaky white meat. When fishing for them, use a slow retrieve with live bait or soft plastics bumped along the bottom. A local trick is to let the flounder take the bait and run with it for a few seconds before setting the hook - they like to grab prey sideways in their mouths before swallowing. Patience is key, but landing a big flattie is always rewarding.
